For
as long as I can remember I've been downloading
TrekkieGrrrl's morphing freebies. From the
morphing beer can to her morphing puddle or suds,
she's the one to check first when you need a morphing prop.
Where
do you call home?
I
live in Aarhus, Denmark. Although it's the second-largest
city in
the country, it's pretty small, 250,000 inhabitants.
What
life do you have outside of Poser, any hobbies?
Life?
What's a life outside Poser?! Hmm ok seriously.. Not much.
I belong to a Star Trek club here, we dress up in our uniforms
on
every occasion, also to our bi-weekly meetings. We're a
neat bunch
of nerds I guess. But we're having fun.
What
makes the show so special to you that you meet bi-weekly
to celebrate it?
Well.
First of all it was great when I found out that I was not
the only
nerd ... er TREKKIE in the world. And since my world is
pretty much focused
around the city I live in, finding not just one but a whole
GROUP of
trekkies here was very very cool. I've also always loved
to dress up, and
meeting people who would dress up in uniforms, do strange
salutes, and even
go out publically in town dressed up, with pointed ears
and all, well it
just appealed to my sense of humor. We USUALLY just "go
public" at Star Trek
movie premiers though. Oh and Star Wars premiers too because
it's so much
fun with a group of trekkies attending a Star Wars premier
*G*
Which
do you prefer, Kirk or Picard and why?
PICARD!
Because uhm.. er.. well.. Picard is so darned sexy. And
Kirk... is NOT.
(and neither is Janeway, Sisko nor Archer)
Do
you prefer the old Star Trek or the newer ones and why?
I
guess the "why" is answered with the Kirk/Picard above
In general TOS (The Original Series) makes my toes curl
I'm afraid. We watch
them from time to time in the Star Trek Club, but they make
EVERYBODY's toes
curl, so it's mostly when we're having a Drunk Trek session
the old ones
comes up. Also TNG was the first trek I ever saw on tv,
so to me, TNG is the "REAL" Star Trek.
How
long have you been part of the 3d community?
I
initially started with Poser around when Poser 4 came out,
but
at that time I didn't know much about online communities,
so I was
"alone in the world" with all my questions, and that led
to about a
year where it just sat there on my shelf. Then one day I
was bored
or something and installed it back. And I then went surfing
for some
free Poser stuff and found Renderosity. And Wham. Instant
addiction.
(sorry to be advertising for another site *G*)
What
was your first impression of the community and has it changed
any?
The
Poser community in general are a bunch of mostly very friendly
and
very generous people. I have never met anybody so willing
to share both
knowledge and MODELS! I was in awe when I first found FREE
characters
on the web. The thought that someone just GAVE AWAY stuff
like that?
Wow! So I wanted to be a part of that, and at some point
be able to
share some of it back.
What
direction do you see the community heading?
Oh
I think I left my crystal ball at home. This future thing?
I'm not
good at predictions. I think we'll see more "independent"
sites pop up,
and with the upcoming of Daz Studio, perhaps sites devoted
to THAT alone,
and not even considering Poser.
Are
you looking forward to Daz Studio?
Yes
of course. Aren't we all?
Will
you be actively providing content for Daz Studio once it's
released or sticking to items for Poser?
Er..
I don't know. I guess I'll stick to Poser for some time
still, because
as I've understood it, DAZ studio will be "backwards" compatible
with Poser.
So things made for Poser should work in Daz Studio. But
it's hard to say, as
long as I don't know what D|S can do. Let me put it this
way: So far I've
made only ONE P5 specific thing (a set of toon shaders)
becourse the
majority of people still have P4, and P5 can use P4 stuff.
What
are your primary 3d programs in your model creations?
An
old version of 3DStudio Max (3.1)
What
is your favorite 3d program overall?
Hmm,
that's a split between Max and Poser. Depends on what I
want to do.
Once I used Bryce a lot, but not any more. With the new
models I find it
too tedious to import it into Bryce. And I just never got
the hang of Vue.
Do
you use Poser 4 or 5, and what is your impression of Poser5
?
I
have both, but use mostly PPP, mainly becourse I am short
of RAM (256)
so Poser 5 simply works too slow to my temper. I am VERY
impatient.
I haven't got any real problems with P5 though.
Only that it's slower than PPP.
What
was your first morphing model, what did you use and how
long did it take to make?
My
first morphing model was the morphing beer can. Actually
a rather puny
model, it's basically just a cylinder with a texture map
on. Well that and
it has I think 3 morphs to make it squash and crumble. It
was also my first
Trash item. It didn't take long to model (heh.. make a Max
cylinder, and
that's about it, then UVMap it and... It was actually made
because I wanted
to explore how morphs worked. And then when it was done
I thought I might as
well share it. Then it got a LOAD of downloads and I thought
"Wow, I'll make more trash!"
Where
do you get your inspiration from? I'm not even going to
ask about the dog poop.
Inspiration...
er.. uhm...I look around my computer desk? Heh not quite
but
almost. Sometimes people request something and I start a
race against Little_Dragon
or others who might either provide a link or MAKE the model
*L*
What
was your first publicly available freebie and how did the
responses make you feel?
My
first freebie was a texture map for PhilC's Classic Wrap.
A "worn and torn"
leather texture. And I got my first IM on Renderosity from
someone who thanked
me for making it! How cool is that?! And I still have that
IM I think, in my
archive. It also had a lot - about 1000 downloads in just
a few days, so I was
blown away by my own apparent success. It was GREAT! The
texture map took about
an hour or so I think.
What
was your most popular freebie?
My
Corner With Alley, actually just meant as an add-on for
my first
commercial product, Trash Street, but well, it's also a
stand alone
item and it seems to be quite popular.
What
has been your most successful marketplace product?
So
far Trash Street 1, my first product. Closely followed by
my
Curler Hair and the Combed-over hair for Mike
What
color are your socks?
Right
now they're blue. With some computer-knitted pattern.
How
many models have you made freely available, there are currently
137 in the R'osity freestuff!
Well
137 then. You saved me from counting them *L* I release
all my
stuff on Renderosity, and on my own site as well. There
are one or two
items I've made by request that I have only given to the
one that wanted
it, but that's one or two things only.
Do
you have any ideas of modeling an entire character?
The
closest I've done is my Birdy, it's in the Renderosity Merchant's
Christmas Giveaway. Hmm I guess that makes it 138 things
then.
So
you have no desire to model a human type of figure from
scratch?
Desire?
Well, first of all, I can't model organics that well. Perhaps
some
day, but I think there are so many great human characters
out there. I tend
to make more niche-like products that nobody else makes.
And everybody seems
to make new humans these days...
What
projects are you working on now that you can tease us with?
Right
now I'm about to ship off my Neanderthal male to Daz, where
I hope
they will sell him. They have expressed interest, so I hope
so *fingers crossed*
Any
plans to submit more work to Daz for brokering? (in general,
Poser or Studio)
I
am working on a female neanderthal, also targeted at Daz.
What
project are you most proud of and why?
I
think my Kitchen is my favourite model. I had a lot of fun
making all
the little details and thinking of morphs for whatever would
be cool
if it could move.
Who
are a few of your Poser heroes and what direction did they
give you?
PhilC
is definitely a hero. He's so nice and always helpful. And
he makes great stuff.
Little_Dragon is awesome, he's a living database!
And Dr Geep and his humorous and educating Primers
Also Geralday, we think a lot alike, and make some of the
same things.
I admire his very efficient meshes.
What
are some of your favorite 3d sites?
I
do go most to Renderosity, and Daz, since they made their
forum. But
I like all the sites and try to go there from time to time.
It's just
sometimes hard when some fool decided to make the day at
a measly 24 hours!
What
advice would you give to a new artist in the community?
Never
be afraid to ask "stupid questions". And if you want to
sell something,
make some nice freebies first, so people can get an idea
of what you can do,
in what quality. Also make people familiar with you and
your "brand",
ie: your name/handle.
We'd
like to thank TrekkieGrrrl for all the time and effort
she put into not only this interview, but all of the excellent
props she's contributed to the community over the years. Her
time
spent helping in forums and generally being such a nice person
is
what the 3D community is all about.
Thanks Trek =)
