How to Create Vue-like-plants in Bryce
By: Helmut Schaub (
English Edited by: Linda White)
Adding Color and Transparency-Map   Import the object "leaf.obj"
into your scene

Press the string button and click at the leaf-mesh.
A littee pop-up sreen will be visible
Select "Default basic_mesh_1".

We will smooth the Mesh now.
Click at "E"

Click on the sphere to smooth the leaf-object
  Now click on the "M"
This will take you to the MaterialsLab:

Now click on the button inside the yellow circle.
Bryce has imported the Color-map with the object.
Now we will add the Mask.
Click on "Load" over the black window in the middle.
Load the image "alpha.gif"
The mask will be shown in the middle.
In the right window you can see the masking effect.
But now the leaf would be transparent and the background would be visible.

We have to invert the picture by clicking at the round black and white button in the middle window
Now you can see the leaf in the right window
- the background is transparent.

We go back to the Material-Editor by clicking the check symbol.
Now all parameters should be set as shown in the image on the left
It's important to set the
ambience -slider near zero
You can now see the result if you will render the leaf.

Sometimes its useful (if your plant is in the foreground)
to add a bump map to your object
To do this, select the "bump height" button in channel "B"
Set the color in the left window to "white"
and load the image "color.jpg" into the middle window.
and here is the rendered result
